LADIES IN TABLETOP ROLEPLAYING GAMES
As two of my favourite podcasters, Senda & Emily, put it:
“Here we are, unapologetically existing in this space.”
There are so many women out there with horror stories about trying out an RPG for the first time. Most of the time my conversations with other ladies in the RPG community begin with the story of how we each got into RPGs. Inevitably, the story often begins with “Well, my boyfriend at the time was playing, and …” This is not new. It’s how I got into RPGs. It’s how most of my female friends got into RPGs. It’s not that it’s a bad thing that boys are introducing many of us to this, but it does beg the question Why aren’t there more of us playing/GMing RPGs? I honestly think the stereotype of the single lonely anti-social white boy living in his parent’s basement turns many of us away. Not that the stereotype doesn’t turn away men too, but it certainly doesn’t help attract the ladies. I want our RPG community to be a place where ladies, gents, everyone in between, and anyone who loves anyone to feel safe and included. I want our community to be a positive and welcoming environment for folks of all walks of life. I truly believe that can be this open community – I have faith in us.
