REPRESENTATION IN TABLETOP ROLEPLAYING GAMES

UNAPOLOGETICALLY EXISTING

Representation in our community is SO important. As two of my favourite podcasters, Senda & Andi, put it:

“Here we are, unapologetically existing in this space.”

WOMEN | NON-BINARY AND GENDER-FLUID FOLKS | PEOPLE OF COLOUR | NON-BINARY AND GENDER-FLUID PEOPLE OF COLOUR | WOMEN OF COLOUR | LGBTQIA+ | PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES

WHAT’S WITH THE CATEGORIES?

When I started RPG Casts, I wanted to highlight women in the RPG Podcasting community. I was finding it disparaging that there weren’t more podcasts out there featuring women, so I wanted to find and highlight as many as I could. The more both me and the site grew, the more I realized that I wanted to highlight more than just women; Women aren’t the only groups that are under-represented in the RPG community.

I want to provide a platform where women, non-binary people, people with disabilities, members of the LGBT+ community, people of colour, and women of colour can tell their stories and be seen. So that they can be inspired and get excited about hearing themselves represented in their favourite RPG podcasts. I want RPGs and the RPG podcasting community to be a safe and fun place for them, no matter who they are, what their heritage is, or who they love.

I want our RPG community to be a place where everyone can feel safe and included. This community needs to be a positive and welcoming environment for folks of all walks of life. I truly believe that can be this that community – I have faith in us.

WHAT THIS IS ABOUT

FEATURING MARGINALIZED FOLKS IN THE RPG PODCASTING COMMUNITY

Featuring these groups helps to:

  • Promote their work (because I believe in it);
  • Let them, and their listeners, know that this is a space where they can simply be;
  • Help inspire them, and their listeners, to be active members of the RPG community; and
  • Help highlight them in a way that fans can get excited about hearing/seeing themselves represented in their favourite RPG podcasts.

If you have ever been uncertain about what language to use, the below link is an important must-read reference. Frankly, the English language isn’t fluid the way gender can be. The Transgender Language Primer creators understand that language is complicated and expressing our understanding of gender is even more so.

THE TRANSGENDER LANGUAGE PRIMER“GENDER IS COMPLICATED, AND NO ONE HAS IT COMPLETELY FIGURED OUT”.

More Seats at the Table is an email newsletter designed to highlight analog games made by designers and creators who are cis women, non-binary and agender folk, and trans folk. This newsletter was the brainchild of Kira Magrann and Anna Kreider, who then enlisted Misha Bushyager and Kimberley Lam to help with planning and execution. They send an email newsletter bi-weekly, featuring a roundup of games and game projects by gender-marginalized creators in order to boost awareness of them and to help them reach new audiences.
